The long thin garden

This typical turn of the century terraced cottage had a garden only 5m wide by 32m in length.

Overlooked by a block of flats at the back, the garden needed not only privacy, but area’s to relax and entertain, and somewhere to indulge the owners passion for plants.

We divided the garden into a series of ‘rooms’. The main lawn now leads you through to the entertaining area under a shady and private pergola. Over the sleeper path to the informal gravel garden, more lawn and the elegant garden room beyond. A simple, fluid and more delicate screen from the neighbours windows at the rear of the garden is created using standard Ligustrum trees and a beautiful home office.

The owner also commissioned Joanna to design bespoke garden furniture that would compliment the cottage feel of the garden for her central patio eating area. This was hand made by a talented New Forest furniture craftsman, who created a perfect oak table and benches. More details on bespoke outdoor furniture design and construction can be found on the ‘bespoke outdoor furniture’ page.
